New Wine - I didn't know what I didn't know We're a small organisation with around 1,000 members, and decided to convert to all our annual membership payments via Direct Debit. Tasked with setting up all our systems for doing this, I became increasingly bewildered by all the different steps and regulations. With multiple 'essential' guides from BACS, our sponsoring bank et al, each several hundred pages long, I began to feel that every time I turned a page I came across another regulation I hadn't even considered... which led me to wonder how much else I didn't know yet! Clearly some training was going to be needed. After speaking to someone at our bank and checking the BACS website, I came away with a couple of names to try. Friendly and approachable, Gavin impressed from the first conversation: When I couldn't answer all his initial questions about our set up, he took away the information I could give him, and came back later that day having found out the other answers for me! We are in a slightly unusual situation in that due to our size, we are going via our bank. Gavin was able to tailor his training around this, so we could focus on exactly how our systems would work, and not worry about things we didn't need to know. By holding the course in-house, 4 of us from different departments were able to attend, so I no longer felt I was the only one who understood any of it. The training itself was clear, straightforward, and gave us lots of opportunity to ask our own questions. I came away feeling confident we could set this up after all! Gavin also offered to be on the end of an email or phone if we had any more questions going forward, of which (inevitably) there were several – and each time he's given us a quick and helpful response. We've now transferred over 60% of our members onto Direct Debits, and have successfully taken the first 2 monthly batches of payments.
